Research
Research publication is not mandatory, but it is highly important to work on at least two high-quality research papers. It is strongly recommended to show that you have an aptitude towards research and for that reason any ongoing research will help in making your profile strong. Ensure they are relevant to American’s Professors’ field of study and must be related to a trending and in-demand topics.
GRE
Your aim should be to score at least 305 which is roughly 50 percentile. The average score of all test takers globally is 303. This score is easily achievable if you allocate 3 months with a full-time studies or work. GRE is an exam of Math and English. The level of Math proficiency required is of school grade level 6-8. For English, you need to focus on reading skills and vocabulary. You should not allocate more than 1 year for the GRE preparation.
English proficiency test
If you are planning to take IELTS then you should at least score 6.5 band or ideally 7 bands in the exam. If you are planning to take TOEFL then aim for minimum 85 or ideally 100+. You should prepare for IELTS or TOEFL after you are done with your GRE preparation because GRE will help in improving your English skills that will eventually help you in IELTS or TOEFL. You should allocate at least 1 week in the preparation or maximum 1 month.
Teaching experience (Optional)
Your aim should be to gain any teaching experience, be it tutoring school kids at home or teaching at university level. Any teaching experience will be valuable. This will help you to avail Teaching Assistantship (TA) positions in the US universities. Teaching experience documents are not mandatory but your teaching skills are more valuable.
